Black Metal
Huh, well I guess that was a movie about black metal, but it wasn’t really. It was more so a movie about church burnings I guess. I don’t really care about church burnings. Arson is bad, sure, but I don’t see churches as much more than buildings, and if nobody's inside then, well, it’s not that big of a deal.
The movie features some prominent figures in Black Metal and gives a good foundation to understanding it as a misinterpreted type of music, or at least it clearly wasn’t Satanic. I don’t really know why the churches were burned, I guess it was a rejection of Christianity and cheers to rejecting it and making a statement.
It’s interesting how the media perpetuated the whole thing, creating this ‘brand’ as Eponymous puts it.
Unfortunately the movie doesn’t really get into the music at all, no live footage, no crazy shit on stage, there’s no real connection between the content of the music and the people. No explanation is really given to what the music is and where it comes from. I guess that’s what I was looking for and got a bunch of info about arson.
It’s all good though, kinda interesting but I would have really liked some more nuts and bolts so to speak. That and some on stage animal sacrifice. Then it’d been pretty damn good.
Although there is a suicide scene which looks pretty goddam real.
Thats all

Icecross

Icecross has been growing on me all summer, I can't stop listening to this primitive piece of fuzzed out psychedelic proto-metal. I don't know if that makes any sense, but that's about the only way I can describe it. Icecross is from, you guessed it, Iceland where only 1000 copies of this album were pressed in '73. Fans of psych, metal, prog and experimental will love this album- it belongs in the stash of all hard rock enthusiasts. Besides the rad fuzz leads and heavy darkness, the album cover and anti-establishment/religious lyrics make Icecross some of the best shit I've heard in quite a while. Thanks to the Wyld Chyld once again for putting me on this band, it's about time for another mix trade furl...

Saint Vitus

Brutal, heavy snail-paced power chords? Saint Vitus. One of the originators of killer doom metal? Saint Vitus. Loudest ear popping show I've ever heard at the Satyricon in Portland? Saint Vitus. Death, destruction, heavy alcohol consumption, psychedelic drugs and dragons? Saint Vitus. Living in L.A. during the 80's and giving the middle finger to all the shitty glam bands while staying true to their nostalgic doom sound? Saint fucking Vitus. I think you get the point. Grow some balls and put this in your earholes, this is what metal is supposed to sound like- Born Too Late from '87.

Master's Hammer

The last couple posts have been a little too cute, so I've decided to bring down the hammer- the Master's Hammer that is. This Czech black metal band formed in '83, but didn't put out their first album Ritual until '91. It's almost impossible to describe these guys, they have had a cult following in the underground black metal scene for some time- it's very easy to say if you like black metal, you will love Master's Hammer. When you listen to this, get out all of your aggression, just promise me not to burn your house down. This track "A Fall of Idol" off Ritual is a nice reminder to say fuck off to all that new fake metal bullshit.
