Alright, time for a real post.

Herro, everybody, I gotta start by apologizing for any typos b/c I'm typing today through a massive hangover, a late night full of Thai food, Bombay G+Ts, and lots of Tiger beer.  Today it's time for a real movie, it's time for motherfuckin Anvil.  The first two posts here were more or less historical documents, I posted them b/c they’re noteworthy or whatever.  But Anvil, holy shit.

This is a movie you have to see.  Have you heard of Anvil?  Yes, no, maybe so?  Shit I hadn’t, but after watching this flick I’m sure I’ll never forget them.  

Anvil is a Canadian Metal band, they were popular in the eighties along with all the other bands featured in Decline part 2, they are in fact regarded as one of the original metal bands, having a major influence over the whole scene.  The thing is, after a brief period in the spotlight, something didn’t work out and they quickly faded into obscurity.

But they have never stopped playing shows or recording albums.  This movie, filmed in 2008 follows this ancient rock band on their final push to really become rock stars by recording their 13th album and touring Europe.  You’ve gotta check it out, you'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll wish you'd have actually bought the DVD if you are a pirate.

One further note, Anvil's second label 'Hypnotic Records' was formed by the then-manager of the greatest band of all, Helix.

The Decline Part 2

Dude.  Two words, Hair Metal.  Filmed from 1987 to 1988 Part 2 covers exactly that.  Alice Cooper, Ozzy, Poison, Queensryche, Megadeath, Motorhead, and countless other bands I’ve never heard of, all blathering away about what it’s like to be a rockstar.

While I found Part 1 to be a badass account of a fuckoff crazy underground world, Part 2 is much less so.  The interviews are a fantastic display of mouth diarrheaed jerkoffs spewing brainless garbage into the camera.  Not to say I didn’t enjoy the movie immensely, it’s a fantastic account of a bygone era in music which produced, not one, but two reality TV stars and an American Idol host.  And if that’s not enough it also produced some of the best and laughably worst rock and roll ever recorded.  Check it out for your much needed dose of Hair.

Green & Wood

Another piece of slowly growing on me good shit, here's another underrated release from '09 by LA doom purists Green & Wood. If you take Pentagram, Witchcraft, and sprinkle in a little Melvins and Big Business you would come up with something close to Green & Wood. But even that doesn't really describe them thoroughly, there's also hints of psych and 70's prog arrangements that creep in from time to time. They're coming through Austin tonight, so I'm going downtown to tune in and probably trip out!

Red Fang

Feelin' a tad bit homesick today, nothing to cry about- just a great excuse to post one of Portland's best local bands Red Fang. Every time I hear this fucker it takes me back home, they were just in Austin right down the street at Trophy's and I missed them due to prior bullshit obligations. Their S/T album from last year will fuck your world up, they sound like Sabbath, The Melvins and Motorhead all wrapped into one heavy, fast and punishing album. Check out their rad video for "Prehistoric Dog" filmed in Portland here. For those who were wondering what it was like to live in Portland, this video is a good introduction- heavy alcohol consumption, LARPers, and parks. Oh yeah, did I mention they also did a killer cover of Dust's "Suicide" that could be easily listened to and downloaded below? Enjoy...

Lucifer's Friend

Just pulled this one out of the archives and have been crankin' it up all day, the heavy dark mastery of Germany's Lucifer's Friend S/T debut album from '70. One listen below to the first track "Ride In The Sky" and you'll know what I mean. Call it progressive, doom or just straight up heavy metal- it doesn't matter, these guys were on to something back in '70. If you recognize the vocalist and can't quite think of who it is, your probably right- it's John Lawton who later went on to join Uriah Heep in '76. Love me some Heep, "Easy Livin" is the shit. Lucifer's Friend went on to make some pretty shitty albums, but this album has with stood the test of time and is very underrated. Anyway, have a listen and tell me if it's as rad as I think it is. Sleep

Still recovering from the blast-off I received by the hands of the legendary cult doom-stoner rockers Sleep Saturday night in Portland. I enjoyed what I remember anyway. They sounded so fucking good in fact that I'm posting Sleep's EP Volume 2 which was released in '92 after the band's seminal debut Volume One in '91. Only 1,000 copies were made, it has a rad live cover of Sabbath's "Lord of This World" and two early versions of "The Druid" and "Nain's Baptism" that would later appear on Sleep's Holy Mountain in '93. If you've never heard Sleep I suggest picking up their whole discography which is easy to find for fuck's sake. Sludgy psychedelic ear-popping doom, it doesn't get much better than this. Enjoy..

Icecross

Icecross has been growing on me all summer, I can't stop listening to this primitive piece of fuzzed out psychedelic proto-metal. I don't know if that makes any sense, but that's about the only way I can describe it. Icecross is from, you guessed it, Iceland where only 1000 copies of this album were pressed in '73. Fans of psych, metal, prog and experimental will love this album- it belongs in the stash of all hard rock enthusiasts. Besides the rad fuzz leads and heavy darkness, the album cover and anti-establishment/religious lyrics make Icecross some of the best shit I've heard in quite a while. Thanks to the Wyld Chyld once again for putting me on this band, it's about time for another mix trade furl...

Brutal,heavy snail-paced power chords? Saint Vitus. One of the originators of killer doom metal? Saint Vitus. Loudest ear popping show I've ever heard at the Satyricon in Portland? Saint Vitus. Death, destruction, heavy alcohol consumption, psychedelic drugs and dragons? Saint Vitus. Living in L.A. during the 80's and giving the middle finger to all the shitty glam bands while staying true to their nostalgic doom sound? Saint fucking Vitus. I think you get the point. Grow some balls and put this in your earholes, this is what metal is supposed to sound like- Born Too Late from '87.

Here's some more Australian history, but this time it's in the Metal category which I haven't been posting much of lately. So now I give you the pure filthy fuck-you metal of Buffalo. Not only is Sydney's Buffalo one of Australia's most underrated bands and one of the first bands to produce Metal on the continent, they also fucking rip. Fans of Sabbath, Pentagram, etc. will shit themselves during the first listening of their best work aptly titled Volcanic Rock released in '73. Killer, good old-school riffs make this album playable all the way through- check out "Sunrise(Come My Way)" and "Till My Death" for starters. And let's not forget the phallic album cover which places these assholes on the next level of furldom. So crack open that Schlitz Malt Liquor can you've had in your fridge for a year and play this shit real loud...

Amon Duul II

Amon Duul II developed out of a political artist commune in Germany during the 60's becoming one of the founding creators of the experimental Krautrock sound. This band was in the same radical commune as the founders of the Baader-Meinhof Group, but the members of the band did not agree with their violent political agenda. There's an interesting film made about the group titled The Baader-Meinhof Complex, get more info here. Here's in my opinion their best album, Yeti from '70. The crazy improvisations and progressive sounds within this album put them with Can as the two most important Krautrock bands. "Archangels Thunderbird" is my favorite track off the album- check out these primal, visceral psychedelic sounds and let me know what you think.

Big Business

Bassist and singer Jared Warren, former member of Karp, and Coady Willis, former drummer for Murder City Devils team up to create this exploration into stoner sludgy metal with the band Big Business. Their debut Head For The Shallow released in '05 is like Karp with riffs, an original sound that is hard to believe only a two piece can achieve. All 8 tracks on the album rip, "Focus Pocus" and "Eis Hexe" are my personal favorites, here's the whole album. Play loud.

Blues Creation

The Japanese band Blues Creation with their first all original album Demon and Eleven Children from '71. Eight tracks of pure heavy psych madness in the same vein as their fellow countrymen Flower Travellin' Band. Band leader, creator Kazuo Takeda was most likely listening to Sabbath, Cream, and Zeppelin during the early 70's while creating this mind fuck of a stoner album. Here's the whole album- check out the title track, "Brain Baster" and "Atomic Bombs Away." Fuckin sweet...

Witch

Heavy self-titled debut by Witch from '06. Jay Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. on drums along with some hippies from Feathers. I know, I was also very skeptical but it has surprisingly grown on me. Here's the first two tracks off the album: "Seer" and "Soul of Fire." Pretty rad album cover also.

Acid King

Stoner sludge from San Fran's Acid King. Busse Woods was released in '99, one of their three studio albums. Acid King is led by hardcore front woman Lori S., she named this album after a park teenagers used to party at outside of Chicago where she grew up. Sounds familiar. Here's probably their best track "Electric Machine" off the album.

Om

Metal Monday brings a rad live album by Om titled Live Conference from last year. The album captures how good it is to see this band live, I've included the 21+ minute track "Flight of the Eagle." The album is a full live performance of their album Conference of the Birds and the sound quality is fantastic for a live metal album.
