Mikey's Furl Tracks Mix

Just got a present in the mail from my main man Mikey who always brings the heat, three mixes of obscure soul, punk and garage. I love getting music in the mail- it was like Christmas morning today, a bunch of new shit to play with. Here's the mix he made especially for the blog, a killer mix of old punk/garage with bands such as Silver Chalice, Death and the Afrika Korps. This is why trading mixes is the best, I've never heard San Diego's The Penetrators before, and the track "Warlord" is a fucking rad rocking, gritty jam and probably my favorite on the mix. Man, when I come across bands like this I think: Holy shit how have I never heard this before? And: I've been living without this in my rotation for how long? Pure inspiration to always keep diggin', always new stuff out there to find. Thanks again Mikey, expect something in the mail here eventually- good luck with the new gig and enjoy the crib. African Fuzz and Funk Vol. 1

Finally threw together a mix of some of my favorite African Fuzz/Funk tracks that I've been listening to lately- I've had these gems on repeat around the house for at least half a year now. I've always been on the fringe of attempting to grasp the amazing amounts of music that comes out of Africa, but it's really intimidating knowing my addictive personality. It's also extremely life-affirming when you discover a whole new genre of music that you never knew existed and have it take over everything your listening to. I've always picked up obscure African funk around the blog-sphere or off compilations, but my new fascination lies with the mid-70s psych fuzz brilliance of Zambia's "Zam-Rock." I first heard Chrissy Zebby Tembo a couple years back which began my quest to find anything else that remotely sounded like it. I then discovered Amanaz which blew my mind along with Witch and The Ngozi Family. Long story short, you should listen to this. Even better is you also have somebody doing all the work for you over in Africa- Brooklyn DJ Frank Gossner has erected the holy mothership of a blog Voodoo Funk which makes my blog look like a fucking piss ant. Frank came up with the idea of traveling all around Africa putting up billboards asking people to sell him their old vinyl resulting in a plethora of un-tapped killer African funk, afro-beat, disco and fuzz/psych. Fucking genius idea, why didn't I think of that? Check out his adventures here and be prepared to put in some time. He's also re-releasing many of the albums that he has found, including the Psychedelic Aliens which everyone is anticipating in October. Finally back y'all, not a better way to get back into it than with the next installment of Crunk. We're to Vol. 6 already and not slowin' down, there's always fiends to serve. Crunk Junk Vol. 5

Here's the latest edition of the Crunk Junk series for all you fiends out there. I've always posted these mixes mainly for people I work with and a few other furls, but it seems they're being downloaded just as much as everything else on the blog- go figure. So I've decided to post them with full playlist listings and some insight into the highlights of each mix. I've been putting these mixes together going on about 4 years to listen to in the kitchen (work), we used to have competitions on who could find the most ridiculous underground hip-hop tracks. From this spawned a full fledged addiction like fiends on crack- I collect all the new leaks off mixtapes and compile my favorites to make these mixes. Usually these mixes are filled with the usual suspects who sell beats like dope, putting out new shit almost weekly. This includes OJ, Gucci and Three 6 who never fail to deliver. Vol. 5 also brings us a strong return of that furl Project Pat with the club track "Dreads Shakin' Wild As Hell" and a killer remix of "Burglar Bars." Latin Blends Vol. 1

I've been diggin' the Latin flava lately since I've been attempting to learn Spanish this summer. So here's a mix I put together of some of my favorite old-school Latino sounds from my collection. Almost every base is covered here, from psych to funk to traditional Latin music. I like making these mixes because I can post many tracks I'd probably never get around to posting, such as obscure 45s. The list includes classic gangsta low-rider anthems such as Malo's "Suavecito" and the Turks' "I'm A Fool." Also included are original garage tracks from Thee Midniters and Cannibal and the Headhunters along with a couple seminal heavily sampled funk tracks "Hector" by the Village Callers and "Mango Meat" by Mandrill. I also threw in the power psych rocker "Only Good For Conversation" off Cold Fact by Rodriguez. Let's also not forget about "Can't Be A Lie" by Los Mockers, one of my favorite tracks right now. Yes yes ya'll, we are gonna jump right on in with some funky disco goodness out of the windy city area. Captain Sky had a short lived career riding the P-Funk wave of boogie, bass and platform shoes, however in that short span he created "Super Sporm," which went on to be sampled by Public Enemy, BDP, and others. No blues or country today, returning to some funk I just had to post. The Wyld Chyld just dropped me his latest mix containing some nasty Miami funk and other dope shit. I'm posting some of the funk highlights off the mix, they also go well with the Underground Disco mix I posted last Friday. Miami's main man George McCrae's "I Get Lifted" off Rock Your Baby seen above is the jam, following is All The People with "Cramp Your Style." I'm throwing in an instrumental "Hoppin' John" by the Packers, who later became the seminal Booker T and the MG's. Thanks to J for the mix.

Underground Disco Vol. 1

Yeah, that's right... Disco on Furltracks. Before you stop following this blog after this post, let me persuade you to check this mix out. I've stumbled across most of these tracks over the years accidentally with each one grabbing my attention at first listen. This mix is a listen into the underground disco scene over the last 30+ years. I guess I could label most of these tracks post-disco, but I'm not into labels. I could also say that most of these tracks have had a huge influence on hip-hop and electronic artists, but all of these tracks can stand on their own. This is a mix of dope clap beats, new and old synthy joints, space jams and plain weird shit that's a great soundtrack for a late night blown-out dance shindig.
