Christmas has came early, I forgot I had this mix of Kool Keith tracks that I made a couple years back- so I'm now giving it to you. A perfect soundtrack to your holiday season equipped with the best Matthew has to offer. Kool Keith has made around roughly 36 albums, and 16 are represented on this mix. As most of you know KK has went under many different aliases over the span of his career, changing between the mostly three styles of Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon and Kool Keith. Some of you may have never heard The Cenobites before, the album Keith and The Godfather Don made shortly after the Ultramagnetic MC's disbanded- it's really good. Dr. Octagonecologyst and Sex Style are easily my favorite albums, but throughout his extensive catalog lies some off the wall and great shit, especially his early work. Songs The Cramps Taught Us Volume 1

Still in the Halloween mood? Good, after I posted the Frantics yesterday I thought to myself, what's a Halloween post without The Cramps? So I give you Volume 1 of 3 of one of the best compilation series ever made, Songs The Cramps Taught Us. This collection contains classics such as The Sonics "Strychnine" and The Groupies "Primitive" but also has some great cuts you may of never heard such as the original "Goo Goo Muck" by Ronnie Cook & The Gaylads and the soul burner "Whiplash" by the Shells. These are just a couple examples from this 31 track collection, Elvis' "Do The Clam" is another highlight. Also can't forget about one of The Cramps biggest influences Charlie Feathers shows up on here twice with "Can't Hardly Stand It" and "Sunglasses After Dark." These comps were put together by Poison Ivy of The Cramps, apparently he has quite the record collection. I have all three volumes so if you like let me know, enjoy...

Astral Daze

Really diggin' this compilation of psych out of South Africa I've had for a while now, finally got a chance to sit down and give it a long listen. And holy shit I'm glad I finally did. Astral Daze - Psychedelic South African Rock 1968-1972 contains everything from fuzz, hard and sweeping riffs to all out pure insanity. Check out both tracks by the Freedom Children, especially the one with Dickie Loader called "The Eagle Has Landed." Yes Dickie, the Eagle has definitely landed for you. Also the track "Morning Light" by Tidal Wave has gripped me also, listen to it below. Everything on here is worth a listen...

Charlie Rich

Switching it up with a little country infused soul by none other than Mr. Charlie Rich. This album has always intrigued me due to Charlie's seemingly easy transitions between many forms of music, from country to soul/R&B to jazz, Rich used to do it all. The later titled "Silver Fox" as he came to be known started his career at Sun Records to little avail, he was a session musician for the likes of Johnny Cash and Billy Lee Riley. He made some minor waves after Sun with Smash Records and then wound up on Hi Records in '66 where he made some the best overlooked blue-eyed soul around. This album is a 28 track collection released out of the UK in '00 encompasses all of his work on Hi. This whole album is a killer listen, soul burners such as "Can't Get Right" and the northern soul hit "Love Is After Me" highlight this comp. The last half focuses on his country tracks he recorded on Hi during this stint including a couple Hank Williams covers. All in all a great piece to add to your collection.

The Mirrors

Finally back after the move of death, picked up some good old records on the voyage through the desolate parts of the country though. Mostly old outlaw country and a couple surprises, but I saved today's record for my first post after the long hiatus. For the probably five of you who are still attempting to follow this blog, I apologize for the lack of warning I wouldn't be posting for a couple of weeks- now fuck off. Yada,yada- keep sending me music, I'm still here! Moving on, today's post is a recently pressed almost "best of" compilation of Cleveland's The Mirrors on Violet Times Records. I first heard the Mirrors on the classic Cleveland compilation Those Were Different Times released in '97 which was a sampling of three Ohio bands between '73-'76 who would later evolve into the iconic punk and new wave bands such as Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys. These three bands were The Electric Eels, Styrenes, and this band- The Mirrors. The Mirrors instantly gripped me with their jangly, Velvet Underground sound, but the band is way more than that- their slow lo-fi experimental sound grasps everything psych bands since have attempted to emulate. If you don't believe me check out "Annie." For the first time the bulk of their best stuff (they only recorded from '74-75) is captured on the vinyl Something That Would Never Do for our listening enjoyment. Only 800 copies exist apparently, so I suggest picking this up quickly if you like. For those of you in Portland, I did see a copy at Mississippi Records a while back for only $18. 'Wavy Gravy'

Changing pace with 'Wavy Gravy' For Adult Enthusiasts... Various Weird Recordings From The 50's Vol. 1, the origination of what today we call podcasts and other compilations of the like combining B horror/grindhouse film trailers with weird obscure tracks. This is where I got the idea to mix in recorded film scenes into my mixes I used to make for people way back- but nobody can do it like the Wavy Gravy creators. Not only are the trailers along with the songs extremely entertaining- the way they're woven together is brilliant. This compilation is meant to be listened to in its entirety, I suggest having a couple of friends over who won't let their douche flags fly to high and bright to listen to this remarkable comp- you won't be disappointed. The combination of trailers and tracks gives the album a seedy 50s degenerate feel that will hook you, you'll be scrambling to find Vol. 2. Some highlights include the demented country song "Psycho" by none other than the sinister Eddie Noack who's other mental song "Dolores" was featured on the God Less America comp. If I had to pick a favorite it would be "L.S.D" by Wendell Austin, a song about his awful experiences on acid or as he calls it "hallucination blues." This is mandatory people, enjoy the weirdness...

Cambodian Rocks

Here's the original comp that started the Cambodian Rock craze, American tourist Paul Wheeler bought a bunch of cassettes in Phnom Penh and compiled them into this compilation in 1996. Many tracks on Cambodian Rocks have western garage and psych influences blended in with a unique East Asian sound. This music was lost for years during the reign of the Khmer Rouge in which many of these musicians were killed starting in '75. A tragic story to say the least, there's a documentary in production about this story titled Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll that looks amazing- check out the trailer and info here. Many of the tracks deserve Nuggets notoriety, check out "Chnam oun Dop-Pram Muy(I'm 16)" by Ros Sereysothea, "Sralanh Srey Chnas(I Love Mean Girl)" by Pan Ron & In Yeng and "Rom Sue Sue(Dance Soul Soul) by Liev Tuk. God Less America

Since its compilation week I figured it would be a crime not to post this album in it's entirety. This is by far one of my favorite comps of all time, a slew of super obscure country tracks put together by Crypt Records titled God Less America: Country&Western fer all ye Sinners' n' Sufferers, 1955 - 1966. I've already posted a couple tracks off this comp back when I wasn't posting full albums, so now you can enjoy this puppy all the way through. Every track evokes the dark side of country livin'- murder, alcohol and drug abuse, having a stripper for a mother and just plain strange shit. Not only are the lyrics entertaining, but all the sounds and production are even better. This one is not to be missed ya' hear...

The Moving Sidewalks

Just picked up an unreleased track "Stay Away" by the Moving Sidewalks sparking a full fledged reminder of how good their first and only album Flash sounds. Of course most of you know this is where Billy Gibbons and Dan Mitchell of ZZ Top made their start in music in Texas back in '68. This is heavy psych at its finest- the influences of their fellow Texas denizens Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators combined with their friend and tour mate Jimmi Hendrix are very evident. Legend has it the Sidewalks opened for the Elevators in Houston the night Roky was arrested on stage after the first couple songs of their set. By the way if you haven't seen You're Gonna Miss Me, the documentary about the life of Roky, I highly suggest you do. It's also full of interesting interviews with Billy Gibbons. Anyway, here's the remastered album with a couple bonus tracks including their rad cover of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles. The whole album has no fillers, my favorites are the album's single "99th Floor," and "Need Me," "Flashback," and the wicked "Crimson Witch." I'm also throwing in the unreleased track "Stay Away." J.J. Jackson

Finally back after my getaway up to Canada, it's completely understood now that the big country to the north is not quite ready for the furl mentality. Picked up some records on my trip so stay tuned in. Here's the legendary soul belter J.J. Jackson's album But It's All Right! from '66. Mr. Jackson is most known for his northern soul hit "But It's All Right" which was actually recorded in England. It reached #22 on Billboard that year cementing it as a classic soul track. But this is only the tip of what Jackson has to offer, like hits such as "Come And See Me (I'm Your Man)" which will be later covered by the Pretty Things. I'm also throwing in the bonus track "Oo-Ma-Liddi" when he performed with the Jackaels back in the day. I first discovered J.J. on Lux Interior's L.A. famed radio show compilation The Purple Knif Show which I suggest picking up if you haven't yet. Enjoy...

DJ Z-Trip & DJ P

This mix album Uneasy Listening Vol. 1 released in '01 by DJ Z-Trip and DJ P is the foundation of the mash-up genre, they made the album in a week using all vinyl. Not only is it one of the best party albums of all time, it's also very nostalgic due to the wide array of shitty and dope samples they mash together. Examples include Bruce Hornsby over the beat of Newcleus' "Jam On It" and Pharcyde over Pat Benetar's "Love Is A Battlefield"- if you can imagine what that sounds like. Also included is Rush, Midnight Oil and yes- Phil Collins to name a few all mixed over different breakbeats. Let's also not forget the killer samples from films such as The Warriors and Star Wars also interwoven into this over the top shit. Only 1000 official copies are in existence, with most of the other mp3 downloads containing the wrong gaps making it pretty tough to find a good copy. My version should work properly unless winrar fucks it up somehow- let me know if it works. This is essential for every taste in music, there's something for everybody on Uneasy Listening, check it...

God Less America

Here's the best of the rest from the God Less America compilation that I posted a couple weeks back. Highlights include Troy Hess' "Please Don't Go Topless Mother," sang by a son who doesn't approve of his mother's occupation. "Enchanted Forest" by Mohawk and the Rednecks is a track about a cowboy's acid trip. Arkey Blue's "Too Many Pills" is self-explanatory, and last but certainly not least is "Down and Out" by Chuck Wells. This is some of the best country music I've ever came by, thanks to Crypt records for making this great comp.
