Astral Daze

Really diggin' this compilation of psych out of South Africa I've had for a while now, finally got a chance to sit down and give it a long listen. And holy shit I'm glad I finally did. Astral Daze - Psychedelic South African Rock 1968-1972 contains everything from fuzz, hard and sweeping riffs to all out pure insanity. Check out both tracks by the Freedom Children, especially the one with Dickie Loader called "The Eagle Has Landed." Yes Dickie, the Eagle has definitely landed for you. Also the track "Morning Light" by Tidal Wave has gripped me also, listen to it below. Everything on here is worth a listen...

Next is the album Try and Love by Ofege from '73. These five Nigerian kids recorded this when they were in high school which is mind blowing after you hear these 8 tracks of pure fuzzed-out funky afro-rock. This album was just repressed as hasn't hardly been heard in 35 years, apparently this was a huge album in Nigeria back in the day and it's easy to see why. The track "It's Not Easy" is one of the most beautiful tracks I've heard in a long time- Try and Love is easily becoming one of my favorites out of my African fuzz collection. TGIF Y'all (That's for all the bubby's in Portland), haven't posted anything on Friday for a while so I've decided to throw in one or two 45's every Friday to mix things up a bit. I have so many 45's laying around or single tracks people hook me up with I need to post them somewhere on a regular basis. First off is a great soul 45 I just picked up in the middle of nowhere southeastern Colorado. Joe Tex is the man, and "I Gotcha" from '72 is one of his best hits...



Next we have the heavy fuzz grizzle riff of this old gem by Glass Sun titled "I Can See The Light" from '69. Been listening to this obscure piece of psychedelia since I picked it up way out in Baker City, Oregon during my drive. Have a good weekend my furls and enjoy...

African Fuzz and Funk Vol. 1

Finally threw together a mix of some of my favorite African Fuzz/Funk tracks that I've been listening to lately- I've had these gems on repeat around the house for at least half a year now. I've always been on the fringe of attempting to grasp the amazing amounts of music that comes out of Africa, but it's really intimidating knowing my addictive personality. It's also extremely life-affirming when you discover a whole new genre of music that you never knew existed and have it take over everything your listening to. I've always picked up obscure African funk around the blog-sphere or off compilations, but my new fascination lies with the mid-70s psych fuzz brilliance of Zambia's "Zam-Rock." I first heard Chrissy Zebby Tembo a couple years back which began my quest to find anything else that remotely sounded like it. I then discovered Amanaz which blew my mind along with Witch and The Ngozi Family. Long story short, you should listen to this. Even better is you also have somebody doing all the work for you over in Africa- Brooklyn DJ Frank Gossner has erected the holy mothership of a blog Voodoo Funk which makes my blog look like a fucking piss ant. Frank came up with the idea of traveling all around Africa putting up billboards asking people to sell him their old vinyl resulting in a plethora of un-tapped killer African funk, afro-beat, disco and fuzz/psych. Fucking genius idea, why didn't I think of that? Check out his adventures here and be prepared to put in some time. He's also re-releasing many of the albums that he has found, including the Psychedelic Aliens which everyone is anticipating in October. Icecross has been growing on me all summer, I can't stop listening to this primitive piece of fuzzed out psychedelic proto-metal. I don't know if that makes any sense, but that's about the only way I can describe it. Icecross is from, you guessed it, Iceland where only 1000 copies of this album were pressed in '73. Fans of psych, metal, prog and experimental will love this album- it belongs in the stash of all hard rock enthusiasts. Besides the rad fuzz leads and heavy darkness, the album cover and anti-establishment/religious lyrics make Icecross some of the best shit I've heard in quite a while. Thanks to the Wyld Chyld once again for putting me on this band, it's about time for another mix trade furl...

Going to start a theme today posting some of my favorite Compilation albums for your listening pleasure. Here's a perfect way to start with the Stones Throw compilation Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas- the name says it all. This is the first compilation of Brazilian fuzz-funk-psych 45's ever produced, and it is heavy. The whole album encompasses the best psych from the Tropicalia movement, in other words, this shit is bananas! Mandatory for anyone who enjoys anything on this blog. Enjoy...

The Moving Sidewalks

Just picked up an unreleased track "Stay Away" by the Moving Sidewalks sparking a full fledged reminder of how good their first and only album Flash sounds. Of course most of you know this is where Billy Gibbons and Dan Mitchell of ZZ Top made their start in music in Texas back in '68. This is heavy psych at its finest- the influences of their fellow Texas denizens Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators combined with their friend and tour mate Jimmi Hendrix are very evident. Legend has it the Sidewalks opened for the Elevators in Houston the night Roky was arrested on stage after the first couple songs of their set. By the way if you haven't seen You're Gonna Miss Me, the documentary about the life of Roky, I highly suggest you do. It's also full of interesting interviews with Billy Gibbons. Anyway, here's the remastered album with a couple bonus tracks including their rad cover of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles. The whole album has no fillers, my favorites are the album's single "99th Floor," and "Need Me," "Flashback," and the wicked "Crimson Witch." I'm also throwing in the unreleased track "Stay Away." If you've never heard this prepare to get your mind blown...

"Witch Woman" is the B side to a weird cover of "Great Balls of Fire" by Nightmare, a French and apparently fucking insane band- insanely rad that is. The Drag Set/The Open Mind

A little late night garage history for ya, here's two joints out of England by the group first known as The Drag Set who put out one killer 45 on Strike Records "Day and Night"/"Get Out of My Way" in '67. Following this release they became The Open Mind and dropped this single "Magic Potion" in '69, a perfect drugged-out late night jam with the lyrics How do you feel?... I FEEL FINE! The Masters Apprentices

Australia's The Masters Apprentices self-titled debut from '67. These Aussies made some great tunes early in their career, becoming one of Australia's most popular bands of the 60's. Songwriter Mick Bower coupled with singer Jim Keays flourished with their blend of gritty British influenced R&B and melodic rhythms before Bower left the band in late '67 following an apparent nervous breakdown. The band made a couple more decent albums and then traveled to England channeling a more progressive sound before disbanding in '72. This album is a mix of good covers and originals all produced by Bower such as "Undecided," "War Or Hands Of Time," and "But One Day." Enjoy...
