Selda

Finally back after the madness of SXSW, here's the queen of Turkish psych Selda with "Ince Ince" off her S/T release from '76 reissued by Finders Keepers. Thanks to David for introducing me to this- great work my friend...

The World Ends

More African Psych Funk coming your way again from the country of Nigeria, The World Ends: Afro Rock & Psychedelia In 1970s Nigeria developed by Soundway Records once again proves the vast amount of amazing music to come out of this west African country. The comp is 32 tracks of funky, fuzzy psych and afro-rock that gives the middle finger to convention. It's split into two parts which can be picked up below, here's a small taste by The Strangers titled "Onye Ije." This is a must have my furls...

Earth and Fire

Finally back online, been busy lately with work and whatnot, but now it's time for a little taste of heavy Dutch proggy goodness. Yes, that's right, Earth and Fire's '70 S/T debut. Think Shocking Blue but heavier with a prog twist. Rad! Wyld Chyld recommended the first track on the album "Wild and Exciting" which is very aptly titled. A titanic heavy riff with crazy prog changes and great vocals from lead singer Jerney Kaagman. I then soon discovered how good the whole album was and just had to post it, considering this all I've been listening to the last week. Here's "Wild and Exciting" for you to hear below, then the obvious next step is to download the rest of the album below that. Oh yeah, the album also includes nine bonus tracks! Enjoy...

Vibrant Vietnam

Hey yall, today we got a new furl in the mix, a guest post from Ted, and appropriately I'm putting up this insane mix of pre-war Vietnamese jams. The stuff ranges from traditional-ish, to garage-ish, to go-go dance-ish...it's weird, it's cool, it's Vietnam. The story behind the making of the mix (which was in no way me) is really dope, check out the story of digging for and dusting off these old crazy shits. Check out the story and the original album art (really cool) Here

Los Monstruos

Killer mid-60's beat surf jam by Los Monstruos titled "Hey Monstruo." This is coming just in time for Halloween, play this at your shindig and get everybody dancing to this old piece of Guadalajara garage. Heavy beat, chanting Spanish lyrics, and a fuzzy surf guitar from hell...

Four tracks of rare Frenchy out of sight fuzz by Les Problemes. This was made in '65 with some shitty attitudes probably explaining why it's so good. Enjoy...

Astral Daze

Really diggin' this compilation of psych out of South Africa I've had for a while now, finally got a chance to sit down and give it a long listen. And holy shit I'm glad I finally did. Astral Daze - Psychedelic South African Rock 1968-1972 contains everything from fuzz, hard and sweeping riffs to all out pure insanity. Check out both tracks by the Freedom Children, especially the one with Dickie Loader called "The Eagle Has Landed." Yes Dickie, the Eagle has definitely landed for you. Also the track "Morning Light" by Tidal Wave has gripped me also, listen to it below. Everything on here is worth a listen...

Friday 45's

In a giving mood today, probably because the drank and sunshine is pourin' up and down on me down here in Austin. First is this infectious blue-eyed soul 45 of Miss Chris Clark. This hard drivin' soul burner "Loves Gone Bad" off V.I.P Records from '66 will start any weekend or party off right...

Next is the album Try and Love by Ofege from '73. These five Nigerian kids recorded this when they were in high school which is mind blowing after you hear these 8 tracks of pure fuzzed-out funky afro-rock. This album was just repressed as hasn't hardly been heard in 35 years, apparently this was a huge album in Nigeria back in the day and it's easy to see why. The track "It's Not Easy" is one of the most beautiful tracks I've heard in a long time- Try and Love is easily becoming one of my favorites out of my African fuzz collection. Damn this is good, enjoy...

Juan De La Cruz

Can't get enough of this band right now, here's the second album from early Pilipino rockers Juan De La Cruz band Himig Natin from '73. This album is more blues influenced than their debut, but they add some real special shit especially with the track "I Wanna Say Yeah" which is by far my favorite track right now. The intro lyrics: Get drunk all day/Get down all night... Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I wanna say YEAH!!! Perfect soundtrack to my life right now- don't be a shitwit, grab this now. Enjoy...

Os Brazoes

Here's a nice slice of Brazilian psych tropicalia for your minds, this rare album of super fuzzy psych is all over the map while still staying within Brazil's samba traditions. Os Brazoes released this self-titled album in '69 channeling a heavier psychedelic sound than most other native bands of the time in Brazil such as Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil. There's also a cover of Jorge Ben's "Carolina" who I posted a while back. Time to tune in and let go with this one, enjoy...

African Fuzz and Funk Vol. 1

Finally threw together a mix of some of my favorite African Fuzz/Funk tracks that I've been listening to lately- I've had these gems on repeat around the house for at least half a year now. I've always been on the fringe of attempting to grasp the amazing amounts of music that comes out of Africa, but it's really intimidating knowing my addictive personality. It's also extremely life-affirming when you discover a whole new genre of music that you never knew existed and have it take over everything your listening to. I've always picked up obscure African funk around the blog-sphere or off compilations, but my new fascination lies with the mid-70s psych fuzz brilliance of Zambia's "Zam-Rock." I first heard Chrissy Zebby Tembo a couple years back which began my quest to find anything else that remotely sounded like it. I then discovered Amanaz which blew my mind along with Witch and The Ngozi Family. Long story short, you should listen to this. Even better is you also have somebody doing all the work for you over in Africa- Brooklyn DJ Frank Gossner has erected the holy mothership of a blog Voodoo Funk which makes my blog look like a fucking piss ant. Frank came up with the idea of traveling all around Africa putting up billboards asking people to sell him their old vinyl resulting in a plethora of un-tapped killer African funk, afro-beat, disco and fuzz/psych. Fucking genius idea, why didn't I think of that? Check out his adventures here and be prepared to put in some time. He's also re-releasing many of the albums that he has found, including the Psychedelic Aliens which everyone is anticipating in October. All right enough blathering, let's get into the music shall we? Here's a small sampling of some stuff I've found, and if you have something you think I'd like- hit me up, enjoy:

Ah! Congo- Orchestre National du Congo
Feeling Good- Chrissy Zebby Tembo & Ngozi Family
Bazali Bam- Bazali Bam
Easy Street- Amanaz
05. A5- The Blackfoot
Atate- Ngozi Family
Eté Endénesh Gèdawo- Mèllèssè, Mulugèn
Little Clown- The Witch
Peter Tsotsi, Nashil Pichen & The Equator Sound Band - Pole Musa
History of Man- Amanaz
Khubani- J. K. Mayengani And The Shingwedzi Sisters

Juan De La Cruz

Here's your new favorite album, the heavy psych of the Philippines' Juan De La Cruz with Up In Arms from '71. This is the band's debut after forming in '68 to bring heavy rock to their native country. This album is all over the map blending flutes, piano, and saxophones into killer heavy guitar work. If you don't believe me, listen to "Requiem For A Head" and my personal favorite "Mystery Roach" with it's dirty sax woven into a fuzzy guitar riff. The original six tracks along with an additional five live tracks that surprisingly sound really good are included in the album. Don't sleep on this, enjoy...

Pugh Rogefeldt

It's hotter than the devil's gooch here in Portland causing much impatience on the PC lately, but we're back online with a quick post for your summertime blues. Here's the Swedish singer Pugh Rogefeldt's track "Love, Love, Love" which DJ Shadow fans will recognize instantly for the killer break at the beginning of the track that he sampled for "Mutual Slump" back in the day. It just so happens the track is worthwhile in it's entirety, it has a psychedelic blues/funk feel to it. Enjoy...

Icecross

Icecross has been growing on me all summer, I can't stop listening to this primitive piece of fuzzed out psychedelic proto-metal. I don't know if that makes any sense, but that's about the only way I can describe it. Icecross is from, you guessed it, Iceland where only 1000 copies of this album were pressed in '73. Fans of psych, metal, prog and experimental will love this album- it belongs in the stash of all hard rock enthusiasts. Besides the rad fuzz leads and heavy darkness, the album cover and anti-establishment/religious lyrics make Icecross some of the best shit I've heard in quite a while. Thanks to the Wyld Chyld once again for putting me on this band, it's about time for another mix trade furl...

Cambodian Rocks

Here's the original comp that started the Cambodian Rock craze, American tourist Paul Wheeler bought a bunch of cassettes in Phnom Penh and compiled them into this compilation in 1996. Many tracks on Cambodian Rocks have western garage and psych influences blended in with a unique East Asian sound. This music was lost for years during the reign of the Khmer Rouge in which many of these musicians were killed starting in '75. A tragic story to say the least, there's a documentary in production about this story titled Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll that looks amazing- check out the trailer and info here. Many of the tracks deserve Nuggets notoriety, check out "Chnam oun Dop-Pram Muy(I'm 16)" by Ros Sereysothea, "Sralanh Srey Chnas(I Love Mean Girl)" by Pan Ron & In Yeng and "Rom Sue Sue(Dance Soul Soul) by Liev Tuk. This is highly recommended, enjoy...

Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas

Going to start a theme today posting some of my favorite Compilation albums for your listening pleasure. Here's a perfect way to start with the Stones Throw compilation Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas- the name says it all. This is the first compilation of Brazilian fuzz-funk-psych 45's ever produced, and it is heavy. The whole album encompasses the best psych from the Tropicalia movement, in other words, this shit is bananas! Mandatory for anyone who enjoys anything on this blog. Enjoy...

Latin Blends Vol. 1

I've been diggin' the Latin flava lately since I've been attempting to learn Spanish this summer. So here's a mix I put together of some of my favorite old-school Latino sounds from my collection. Almost every base is covered here, from psych to funk to traditional Latin music. I like making these mixes because I can post many tracks I'd probably never get around to posting, such as obscure 45s. The list includes classic gangsta low-rider anthems such as Malo's "Suavecito" and the Turks' "I'm A Fool." Also included are original garage tracks from Thee Midniters and Cannibal and the Headhunters along with a couple seminal heavily sampled funk tracks "Hector" by the Village Callers and "Mango Meat" by Mandrill. I also threw in the power psych rocker "Only Good For Conversation" off Cold Fact by Rodriguez. Let's also not forget about "Can't Be A Lie" by Los Mockers, one of my favorite tracks right now. Here's the playlist, enjoy:

Escuchame, Alumbrame- Los Gatos
Shains a Go Go- Los Shains
Strange World- Cannibal & the Headhunters
Mango Meat- Mandrill
Only Good For Conversation- Rodriguez
Soul Drummers 45- Ray Barretto
I'm A Fool- The Turks
Guajira Sicodelica- Los Destellos
The Town I Live In- Thee Midniters
Rompan Todo- Los Shakers
All Day Music- War
Searching For Love- Ray Jay and the Eastsiders
Can´t Be A Lie- Los Mockers
Stone Cold Picnic- Mongo Santamaria
Sombras De Tu Recuerdo- Los Angeles Negros
I Found A Peanut- Thee Midniters
The Fat Man- Cannibal & the Headhunters
Dos Guitarras- Los 4 Planetas
Suavecito- Malo
Free And Easy- Disturbas
Changing The Colors Of Life- Los Chijuas
Hector- The Village Callers
The Party's Over- The Latin Souls

Socrates Drank The Conium

Still ridin' strong on some psychedelic sounds, they always seem to find their way back into my rotation during the summertime. Especially these two albums of heavy prog psych madness by Socrates Drank The Conium, Greece's creative answer to the copious influences of such bands as Jimi, Cream, and Black Sabbath during the late 60s and early 70s. But the insane guitar playing of Socrates' guitarist Yannis Spathas elevates them above many who attempt to navigate the realms of progressive music. So I give to you in my opinion their two best albums: their '72 self-titled debut which concentrates on a more bluesy/psychedelic voyage and their third album On The Wings which is heavier and darker. Socrates' frontman Antonis Tourkoyorgis sometimes strained vocals are hokey at times, but this only adds to the ingenuity of a band who has long been overlooked. Let's also not forget Greece was a dictatorship during this period, which probably explains the straight forward lyrical content and anti-establishment song titles. It is also possible that if it weren't for the circumstances, Greece could of given us Socrates Drank The Conium back in the day instead of Yanni. Enjoy...

Les Variations

Les Variations were one of the first big French bands to make waves in the States and in the international market. Their heavy style earned them a couple record deals in the States later in their career, but I really dig their early stuff off France's Pathe Records. Interestingly enough three of the four original members of the band are Moroccan Jews, so there is some Middle Eastern flavor within their sound. Here's their debut album Nador from '69 along with a couple of separate tracks "What's Happening..." and "I Was Down" which you can listen to below and download if you so choose.
