Can't get enough of this band right now, here's the second album from early Pilipino rockers Juan De La Cruz band Himig Natin from '73. This album is more blues influenced than their debut, but they add some real special shit especially with the track "I Wanna Say Yeah" which is by far my favorite track right now. Sleep

Still recovering from the blast-off I received by the hands of the legendary cult doom-stoner rockers Sleep Saturday night in Portland. I enjoyed what I remember anyway. They sounded so fucking good in fact that I'm posting Sleep's EP Volume 2 which was released in '92 after the band's seminal debut Volume One in '91. Only 1,000 copies were made, it has a rad live cover of Sabbath's "Lord of This World" and two early versions of "The Druid" and "Nain's Baptism" that would later appear on Sleep's Holy Mountain in '93. If you've never heard Sleep I suggest picking up their whole discography which is easy to find for fuck's sake. Sludgy psychedelic ear-popping doom, it doesn't get much better than this. Enjoy..

Just picked up this latest Indian Jewelry album Totaled that was released back in May. These Houston natives were one of my first posts with their album We Are The Wild Beast, and they still remain one of my favorite bands playing right now. This album is full of grimy synth, hard drum beats, and lo-fi distorted vocals which the band labels as "swamp electro" and "nightmare throb." Os Brazoes

Here's a nice slice of Brazilian psych tropicalia for your minds, this rare album of super fuzzy psych is all over the map while still staying within Brazil's samba traditions. Os Brazoes released this self-titled album in '69 channeling a heavier psychedelic sound than most other native bands of the time in Brazil such as Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil. African Fuzz and Funk Vol. 1

Finally threw together a mix of some of my favorite African Fuzz/Funk tracks that I've been listening to lately- I've had these gems on repeat around the house for at least half a year now. I've always been on the fringe of attempting to grasp the amazing amounts of music that comes out of Africa, but it's really intimidating knowing my addictive personality. It's also extremely life-affirming when you discover a whole new genre of music that you never knew existed and have it take over everything your listening to. I've always picked up obscure African funk around the blog-sphere or off compilations, but my new fascination lies with the mid-70s psych fuzz brilliance of Zambia's "Zam-Rock." I first heard Chrissy Zebby Tembo a couple years back which began my quest to find anything else that remotely sounded like it. I then discovered Amanaz which blew my mind along with Witch and The Ngozi Family. Long story short, you should listen to this. Even better is you also have somebody doing all the work for you over in Africa- Brooklyn DJ Frank Gossner has erected the holy mothership of a blog Voodoo Funk which makes my blog look like a fucking piss ant. Frank came up with the idea of traveling all around Africa putting up billboards asking people to sell him their old vinyl resulting in a plethora of un-tapped killer African funk, afro-beat, disco and fuzz/psych. Fucking genius idea, why didn't I think of that? Check out his adventures here and be prepared to put in some time. He's also re-releasing many of the albums that he has found, including the Psychedelic Aliens which everyone is anticipating in October. Juan De La Cruz

Here's your new favorite album, the heavy psych of the Philippines' Juan De La Cruz with Up In Arms from '71. This is the band's debut after forming in '68 to bring heavy rock to their native country. This album is all over the map blending flutes, piano, and saxophones into killer heavy guitar work. If you don't believe me, listen to "Requiem For A Head" and my personal favorite "Mystery Roach" with it's dirty sax woven into a fuzzy guitar riff. It's hotter than the devil's gooch here in Portland causing much impatience on the PC lately, but we're back online with a quick post for your summertime blues. Here's the Swedish singer Pugh Rogefeldt's track "Love, Love, Love" which DJ Shadow fans will recognize instantly for the killer break at the beginning of the track that he sampled for "Mutual Slump" back in the day. It just so happens the track is worthwhile in it's entirety, it has a psychedelic blues/funk feel to it. Enjoy...

Icecross

Icecross has been growing on me all summer, I can't stop listening to this primitive piece of fuzzed out psychedelic proto-metal. I don't know if that makes any sense, but that's about the only way I can describe it. Icecross is from, you guessed it, Iceland where only 1000 copies of this album were pressed in '73. Fans of psych, metal, prog and experimental will love this album- it belongs in the stash of all hard rock enthusiasts. Besides the rad fuzz leads and heavy darkness, the album cover and anti-establishment/religious lyrics make Icecross some of the best shit I've heard in quite a while. Larry and the Blue Notes

Here's "Night of the Sadist" by Larry and the Blues Notes that I finally tracked down recently. Some of you may recognize this as their "Phantom" track, but this version is the original- pretty much all the producer did was change "Sadist" to "Phantom" in fear of the original edgy lyrics for the time. The "Night of the Sadist" version is of course better in my opinion, its dark lyrics of an attack by a sadistic killer is better conveyed in this garage classic. Enjoy...

Blaze Foley

I was having a conversation with my workmate Doppelgänger Joe about Austin the other day when he mentioned an Austin underground country singer by the name of Blaze Foley and the song "Clay Pigeons." I asked him if he could send me the track so I could hear it- and he actually did unlike many who talk and don't deliver. I'm fucking glad he did because the song is really good and Blaze's story is even better, he was dear friends with Townes Van Zandt and has been covered by the likes of Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett and John Prine. Blaze was an exceptional, eccentric song writer (as you'll hear in "Clay Pigeons") with a fascination for duct tape. Apparently he wore duct tape on the tip of his cowboy boots to mock poser cowboys who wore silver tipped cowboy boots and also made a full suit completely out of duct tape in which he could be seen walking around Austin in. A charismatic character to say the least, Blaze was tragically shot to death protecting one of his friends in 1989. I interpret this song as the perfect anthem of the country singin' outlaw drifter who was loved by many, Blaze's story has finally left Austin for the whole world to hear. 'Wavy Gravy'

Changing pace with 'Wavy Gravy' For Adult Enthusiasts... Various Weird Recordings From The 50's Vol. 1, the origination of what today we call podcasts and other compilations of the like combining B horror/grindhouse film trailers with weird obscure tracks. This is where I got the idea to mix in recorded film scenes into my mixes I used to make for people way back- but nobody can do it like the Wavy Gravy creators. Not only are the trailers along with the songs extremely entertaining- the way they're woven together is brilliant. This compilation is meant to be listened to in its entirety, I suggest having a couple of friends over who won't let their douche flags fly to high and bright to listen to this remarkable comp- you won't be disappointed. The combination of trailers and tracks gives the album a seedy 50s degenerate feel that will hook you, you'll be scrambling to find Vol. 2. Some highlights include the demented country song "Psycho" by none other than the sinister Eddie Noack who's other mental song "Dolores" was featured on the God Less America comp. If I had to pick a favorite it would be "L.S.D" by Wendell Austin, a song about his awful experiences on acid or as he calls it "hallucination blues." This is mandatory people, enjoy the weirdness...

Cambodian Rocks

Here's the original comp that started the Cambodian Rock craze, American tourist Paul Wheeler bought a bunch of cassettes in Phnom Penh and compiled them into this compilation in 1996. Many tracks on Cambodian Rocks have western garage and psych influences blended in with a unique East Asian sound. This music was lost for years during the reign of the Khmer Rouge in which many of these musicians were killed starting in '75. A tragic story to say the least, there's a documentary in production about this story titled Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll that looks amazing- check out the trailer and info here. Many of the tracks deserve Nuggets notoriety, check out "Chnam oun Dop-Pram Muy(I'm 16)" by Ros Sereysothea, "Sralanh Srey Chnas(I Love Mean Girl)" by Pan Ron & In Yeng and "Rom Sue Sue(Dance Soul Soul) by Liev Tuk. God Less America

Since its compilation week I figured it would be a crime not to post this album in it's entirety. This is by far one of my favorite comps of all time, a slew of super obscure country tracks put together by Crypt Records titled God Less America: Country&Western fer all ye Sinners' n' Sufferers, 1955 - 1966. I've already posted a couple tracks off this comp back when I wasn't posting full albums, so now you can enjoy this puppy all the way through. Every track evokes the dark side of country livin'- murder, alcohol and drug abuse, having a stripper for a mother and just plain strange shit. Not only are the lyrics entertaining, but all the sounds and production are even better. This one is not to be missed ya' hear...

Crunk Junk Vol. 5

Here's the latest edition of the Crunk Junk series for all you fiends out there. I've always posted these mixes mainly for people I work with and a few other furls, but it seems they're being downloaded just as much as everything else on the blog- go figure. So I've decided to post them with full playlist listings and some insight into the highlights of each mix. I've been putting these mixes together going on about 4 years to listen to in the kitchen (work), we used to have competitions on who could find the most ridiculous underground hip-hop tracks. From this spawned a full fledged addiction like fiends on crack- I collect all the new leaks off mixtapes and compile my favorites to make these mixes. Usually these mixes are filled with the usual suspects who sell beats like dope, putting out new shit almost weekly. This includes OJ, Gucci and Three 6 who never fail to deliver. Latin Blends Vol. 1

I've been diggin' the Latin flava lately since I've been attempting to learn Spanish this summer. So here's a mix I put together of some of my favorite old-school Latino sounds from my collection. Almost every base is covered here, from psych to funk to traditional Latin music. I like making these mixes because I can post many tracks I'd probably never get around to posting, such as obscure 45s. The list includes classic gangsta low-rider anthems such as Malo's "Suavecito" and the Turks' "I'm A Fool." Also included are original garage tracks from Thee Midniters and Cannibal and the Headhunters along with a couple seminal heavily sampled funk tracks "Hector" by the Village Callers and "Mango Meat" by Mandrill.
